Be Mindful of How Divorce Can Affect Your Career

We naturally tend to think of the fallout from divorce as being limited to the domestic sphere, meaning we understand that the split will affect living arrangements, daily activities, and, far more significantly, relationships with former spouses, relationships with children, and relationships with relatives.

There is no denying that your home life will indeed undergo the most significant transformation due to a dissolution of marriage. However, experts indicate that the fallout from a divorce can sometimes spread to other perhaps unforeseen areas if a person is not mindful.

For instance, they warn people not to let a divorce have a negative impact on their place of employment, such that it temporarily halts the forward momentum of their career or, far worse, stops it completely.

How exactly can a person accomplish this?

According to experts, it’s perfectly understandable that you would want to share with co-workers or supervisors that you are indeed in the midst of a divorce. However, they also advise keeping any conversations about the impending split to a minimum, as it can make co-workers feel ill at ease and affect everyone’s ability to stay focused.

Similarly, they advise confining all divorce-related activities to your off-hours and making an overall commitment to keeping these two important facets of your life separate. Doing so, they argue, will give you a much-needed reprieve from the stress of the divorce, and ensure that the quality of your work — and your career — don’t suffer in the long run.

Furthermore, they also recommend that you set aside the necessary time to take care of yourself (get a massage, read a book, go to the gym, etc.), as it will help clear your head, and enable you to continue making sound divorce-related and work-related decisions.

If you’ve been through a divorce, how did you manage the transition while working?
